2024

June 24th

At Golden Tulip Hotel Flamenco Cairo

On the 93rd edition of the Cairo Climate Talks, we hosted a full-day expert workshop that brought together a diverse group of specialists, policymakers, government officials, academics, and civil society representatives. The workshop focused on the planning and implementation of Egypt’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with particular emphasis on bridging the gap between planning and execution, integrating diverse sectors, and ensuring inclusivity. The workshop served as a valuable platform for stakeholders from Germany and Egypt to exchange insights and lessons learned from their respective NDC journeys. This collaborative effort aimed to address key imperatives and strengthen preparations for Egypt’s forthcoming NDCs.

Opening Remarks:
Ms. Lorena Mohr, Head of Science and Protocol at the German Embassy in Cairo, delivered a compelling call to action. She underscored that climate change impacts are universally felt and stressed that only through collaborative community efforts can we hope to mitigate these effects. Her remarks set a constructive tone for the day’s discussions, emphasizing shared learning and best practices.

Interactive Group Work:
Between sessions, participants engaged in group work to reflect on the knowledge shared and brainstorm solutions for challenges facing the new round of NDCs. Key takeaways included:

Collective Action: Effective climate change mitigation requires collaborative efforts across communities, governments, and industries.

Innovation and Financing: Structured planning and innovative financial solutions are essential for advancing renewable energy projects and achieving NDC goals.

Inclusive Engagement: Engaging stakeholders at all levels and incorporating local perspectives are crucial for the successful implementation of climate initiatives.

The workshop provided a meaningful forum for dialogue and collaboration, highlighting the necessity for continued efforts and innovative approaches in addressing the climate crisis.

This session highlighted Germany’s commitment to its NDCs and its active role in climate negotiations and financing, with notable projects such as Wind of Change and Nawafei. It also provided an in-depth look at Egypt’s second NDCs, focusing on adaptation policies, energy sector improvements, and financial mobilization efforts.

Emphasizing the importance of national and local collaboration, this session showcased the benefits of inclusive policy development and stakeholder engagement. The discussion advocated for a whole-of-society approach to effectively implement NDCs.

Key factors for project bankability were addressed, with a focus on successful projects like the West Bakr Wind Farm. The session stressed the importance of structured planning and clear criteria for attracting financing.
