Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to Address our Societal Challenges

2019

Nov 11th

At Goethe-Institut Ägypten

On November 11, 2019, Cairo Climate Talks hosted its 63rd panel discussion on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to Address our Societal Challenges. The panel was part of the opening day of Goethe-Institut’s 2019 Science Film Festival Egypt and was preceded by the screening of the movie Humboldt and the Rediscovery of Nature.

The discussion introduced the concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and highlighted examples of best practices in Egypt, the EU and Africa. The experts gave examples of different methods of adopting natural solutions in ways that benefit ecosystems services (such as the production of food, nutritional cycles, recreational benefits). The discussion further explored how natural solutions can be used as a tool to address a range of urban challenges, strengthen climate resilience, and support sustainable developments. During the discussion, the experts also highlighted challenges in the application of NbS in Egypt, including the limited knowledge for nature-based solutions; the insufficient infrastructure and financial support, and the difficulties in upscaling NbS.
